I’m so excited to share this simple and adorable DIY dog treat jar with you today.  Its perfect to give as a small gift or keep for yourself (and your dog.)  My sister, Alice G Patterson, photographed this simple DIY project for me.  With just a few minutes (less than 15) you can personalize a jar for your favorite dog or person.  While we filled them with dog treats, I think they would also be really cute for buttons, spices, office supplies, etc.

Supplies    

•                       small jars with lids
•                       decorative or painter’s tape (not shown)
•                       treats
•                       stickers (we used thickers)

Make sure the jars are clean and dry.  To keep letters straight, apply tape to the bottom as a guide.

We wanted to be sure the seams wouldn’t show, so we started applying the letters with a middle letter.  With a short name like Theo, it probably didn’t matter, but if you’re making a jar for Elizabeth, you’ll want to keep that in mind.

Fill with your pet’s favorite treat.

In addition to a monthly subscription box, we occasionally receive treats for review.  My dogs are not very picky when it comes to treats, but they each seem to have a favorite.   Theo’s is Nature’s Variety Instinct Treats.  He’ll stop whatever he’s doing for one of these.

Sophie loves the grain free Spring Naturals chicken and lamb treats.  I think she enjoys the texture as well as the taste.

Nelly adores Riley’s Organic Dog Treats.  I have to admit I think they are the cutest treats.  We won a free bag from a giveway on Rubicon Days.

Once the stickers are on, I don’t recommend washing the outside of the jar.  If the stickers get wet, I think they will come off.  You can wipe them gently with a wet cloth, I waited a few days to let the stickers set before trying it.

As an adult, I value time spent with loved ones and thoughtful gestures more than I could ever imagine as a kid.    For some, Christmas is the perfect time to adopt a dog.  I thought it would be fun to be a secret Santa and surprise a dozen people who adopt a dog from Humane CNY with a prefilled treat jar.  I also wanted to give a little something to my readers, so I asked Carolynn Lemke from Noble Friends to create some printable gift tags.   All photos were taken by Alice G Patterson Photography.

 I bought my jars at Tractor Supply Company and followed the tips for painted mason jars from the Sweetest Occasion.   I chose a flat white paint and a glossy Hunter green, painting the outside of the jars to keep the inside safe for food.  I painted six of the lids green and left the other six silver.  I have since decided that I prefer the look of the painted lid. 

The  Printable Gift Tags are my favorite part.  Just click to download, print them on cardstock, cut, tie with Baker’s twine or other ribbon and you’re all set!

I printed two sizes of gift tags on 8 1/2 X 11 cardstock:  75 % and 60 % of the original size.

Next comes the fun part, choosing what treats to put inside.  I went with these cute dog biscuits from Old Mother Hubbard that are made in Canada.

I may be biased, but I think these gift tags would be great on any package!   I  also donated a some more treats for the dogs who won’t be home for Christmas in addition to the bucket of goodies from Tractor Supply Company’s sponsored post last week.

I love having dogs,  and I’ve always dreamed of having a beautiful home.  I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive, but sometimes finding the perfect accessory is elusive.  Case in point,  attractive treat jars that don’t cost a fortune.   Glass jars are easy to decorate, but may not fit with every decor.   I purchased three small ceramic canisters (designed for humans) from Crate & Barrel and then decided to glam them up with nail polish of all things.  One of my biggest problems with crafting is one small mistake can ruin the whole thing.  No fears with this DIY ceramic treat jar project, it can be switched up as much as you like.  The second biggest problem was choosing a color scheme, I don’t wear nail polish and really didn’t know the plethora of choices that are out there, so we decided to use the Pantone color of the year as a springboard.    Thanks to my sister, Alice G Patterson, for her styling and photography.

• Supplies:

ceramic jars with lids

nail polish (I wish I knew that it wasn’t all cruelty-free )

nail polish remover

cotton balls

tape (we used duct tape because I was out of painters tape)

optional: scissors or craft knife

Using tape,  mask the area you want to paint.

Apply polish.

Let dry.  You can use a hair dryer to speed up drying time before applying overlapping polish.

Repeat until the design is complete. Tip:  do not reuse tape, some polish will be underneath, and it will not lie flat for next application.

If you make a mistake or change your mind,  use nail polish remover.  This works even after a week, and I’ll let you know if still works in a few months.

I enjoy giving my dogs new treats to try, and when I saw Newman’s Own dog treats, I ordered a few bags.  Aren’t these hearts just perfect for Valentine’s Day?

I am not an expert on dog training or dog nutrition, but I like to give my dogs a variety of treats throughout the day, and all of these are made in the USA.

National Random Acts of Kindness Day is February 17.  To celebrate, I’m donating a copy of MattieDog Gets Adopted to my local elementary school library and the public library in my town.   This book features the story of one my favorite blogging pals,  Mattiedog and the artwork of my friend, Carolynn Lemke.  Carolynn has a custom pet portrait business,  Noble Friends and is also a graphic designer.  Thanks to my sister, Alice G Patterson, for the photos!

Besides a terrific (true) story and adorable illustrations, this book is perfect to give or receive because the proceeds go to help animal rescue and adoption.

In my opinion, one of the best things about random acts of kindness is that they can happen at any time!  And you can choose someone randomly, or you can choose someone individually.

If you prefer to perform a random act of kindness for someone you know, I’m sure it will be appreciated.  Personally, I ‘d love one of these mugs from Noble Friends.

Don’t forget to give your own pets a random act of kindness whether it is an extra long walk, a game of tug, belly rubs or their favorite treat.

Happy Monday!  “For the Love of Peanut Butter” is a fun series of dog portraits by Greg Murray.   Greg is professional dog photographer who knows all the tricks,  some were learned courtesy of his rescued Mastiff, Bailey.  Although Bailey passed away, she is the inspiration for this project.

This winter, Greg invited the dogs of his friends and clients to come to his studio and sample some (Xylitol free) peanut butter.  The results are hilarious and were so well received, Greg decided to turn his personal project into a book.

It is rare to see a funding project that has surpassed its goal with 30 days to go, but that is what has happened for Greg Murray’s For the Love of Peanut Butter book Kickstarter. There are still some terrific opportunities if you’re interested in backing this book.  There is one spot left to have your dog included in his book, so if you are interested, hurry and sign up!

While I wish that every pet could have a portrait session with a professional photographer, I know that isn’t always an option.  Snapshots are okay, but most aren’t worthy of hanging on your wall.  However, photographer and artist, Mandi Pratt from Greyboy Pet Prints can turn a snapshot into a fine art etching.

When I was in 7th grade, I snapped a photo of my dog that captured her personality perfectly.  Sadly, I have no idea where that picture is.  Like so many photos often did, it ended up in a drawer or a box and disappeared with time.  While I carry the image in my heart, I wish I had the photo itself.  It would be perfect to have as an etching from Greyboy Pet Prints.  

Mandi believes in the beauty of art that lets you feel the texture.  She uses traditional techniques from the art of printmaking to honor furry friends in an elegant piece of artwork that will compliment any decor.

I have a huge appreciation for the process of handmade items, and I love these images of the etching process.

 Etsy is one of my favorite places for gift ideas.  I love discovering unique handmade items, such as these portraits from artist Eline  Niemi who runs the Etsy shop Tundrada.  
She makes gorgeous custom pet portraits with a wood burner and a pine slab.  Eline then adds acrylic paint to bring the pictures to life. 

Her store is named in honor of this sled dog, Tundra, and the Latvian word “rada” which means “creates.”

Eline consults with the client several times during the portrait process to make sure he or she is happy with final product.

However smart I think my dogs are, I know they would prefer to get something to eat than read.

I’ve always thought that creativity and compassion go hand in hand.  I was delighted to discover that Jessica Klier from Draw Dawgs combines her artistic talent with helping homeless pets.

From Jessica:  “I started Draw Dawgs in 2017 in hopes that I could create special keepsakes for dog lovers while giving back to animal shelters and rescue groups.

My two rescue dogs are from Los Angeles and they have been my sole inspiration behind Draw Dawgs. Spokane Humane Society, Life Savers Animal Rescue, West LA Animal Shelter, and The Lange Foundation are just a few groups who have been supported by these donations.”

In addition to the dogs, Jessica adds in some wonderful details!  I adore the succulents, but it was such fun to find some favorite characters in one of the portraits.

Gifts don’t have to be expensive to be thoughtful.  A card or a compliment can completely transform a day.  And most of us, especially, dogs, appreciate treats!

As you might guess, most of my friends are dog lovers too. This Valentine’s Day I’m excited to give them blueberry muffins and Vita Bone® Artisan Inspired® Dog Treats for their dogs.  The Maple Bacon & Blueberry flavor is a big hit with all the dogs I know!

I always like giving and getting gifts with a personal touch, so I decided to try out my wood burning kit that I bought a few years ago on a whim.  

Supplies

wood burning kit (mine was inexpensive)

precut wood hearts  (available at craft stores)

practice wood (or extra hearts)

twine

scissors

pliers (not shown)

sandpaper (not shown)

Directions

Attach the desired tip to the wood burning tool.

Turn on and allow to heat up four to five minutes.

If you are stamping a design, press straight down into wood and rock it slightly to make sure the entire design is burned. Make sure to make some test stamps, especially if this is your first time using a wood burner. 

If you are free handing a design, keep the burner moving to avoid blobs.

Use pliers or let tool cool before changing tips. If making multiples,  you can save time by using one stamp on all the pieces before changing tips.

A helpful hint that I wish I would have known:  sand wood prior to burning for a smoother surface!

I bought tags with predrilled holes. Once your tags are decorated, put a string through them.

I love the simplicity of glass jars.  Fill with blueberry muffins or Vita Bone Dog Treats.

Attach the tag, and spread the love!
