Although there are lots of ways to include pets in weddings,  these wedding illustrations by Megan Hamilton are new to me.  In today’s digital world, it is always exciting to see something created by hand like Megan’s portraits.  

From Megan:  “I create my illustrations in my home studio in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Every illustration is hand-drawn using pen and ink, watercolor, and colored pencil techniques from photos provided by my clients.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays.  When my kids were small, we spent a lot of time deciding on the perfect costumes, carving pumpkins, and decorating the house. Now that my kids are older, our Halloween setup is relatively elaborate. With less than a week until Christmas, I know that some people have their shopping all done, gifts wrapped, and possibly even have their cookies made.  However, sometimes despite all the best intentions, you find yourself scrambling for ideas days before a holiday.   So I’m sharing some great last minute gift ideas for dog lovers and their dogs. And for my fellow procrastinators, this might be a recurring theme in your life.  Procrastination does not mean you don’t care.  Some of the reasons for procrastinating include:

1. Just not feeling the holidays this year for personal reasons

2. Indecisive because you care too much and don’t want to make the wrong choice

3. Time-challenged (you have a lousy sense of time or there just aren’t enough hours in the day)

4. You think you work best under pressure

5.  Financial challenges

6. You overlooked someone on your list

Personally, I been in all of those situations throughout the years.  However, I still try to be thoughtful even at the last minute.     Since I’ve been procrastinating for decades, I have a few tips up my sleeve that I’m happy to share with you. The first thing you need to know about a dog lover is her dog means everything to her.  If you want to make her happy,  a good start is to make the dog happy or give her something that shows her you get it.

Easy DIY Gift Ideas

I seriously doubt that anything could be quicker than our Easiest DIY Treat Jars.   Fill it with some delicious treats, and you’re golden!  And while it might not take a lot of time, it is thoughtful and perfect for a minimalist who loves her dog and appreciates a clean aesthetic.

These ceramic treat jars can be personalized any way you like with a little nail polish.  We went with a geometric scheme, but I’m thinking about making some with evergreen trees for the holidays.

If you have a little more time to let the paint dry, these painted mason jars are great for anyone who loves the farmhouse look. (Alternatively, spray them with metallic paint for the woman who appreciates all things shiny.)

My favorite gift to give kids is a stuffed animal.  They are cute, cuddly, and most importantly, I think they encourage creative play.  It broke my heart a little each time one of my kids outgrew their stuffed animals.

However, when we adopted Theo, I was delighted to discover that he loves stuffed toys.

Theo is the king of plush toys.  If he loves one, he carries around from room to room and gently chews on it.  Or else he tears into like it is screaming personal insults at him.  Theo is a master at destuffing toys and destroying the squeakers.   It used to cause me some mental anguish when Theo destroyed one, but I know that he is having fun.   I always look for ones that are well-made with safe materials, and of course, they have to be cute.

When I saw the ZippyPaws Storybook Fiesta Line on Amazon, I wanted all the toys. And I hoped that Theo would love them as well. They are adorable and made with high-quality materials and care.

Theo must have thought it was his birthday; he never gets more than one new toy at a time!

Since I’m also a plant lover, I needed Carmen the Cactus.  She is so cute that I bought two.  I figured it was safest to let Theo test her first since I had a backup. Theo grabbed Carmen and ran all over the room with her in a state of frenzied excitement.  After a few minutes of zooming around, he started to chew on her, testing out her squeaker and stitching.  The squeaker is exclusive to ZippyPaws.   Their engineers created the crescent and jiggler squeakers for different sounds.

She checked out just fine! Since Carmen survived the photo shoot, I gave the second one to Alice’s dog, Darla, who was quite distraught that we didn’t pick her as our model.

Liam, the llama, is my favorite, and Theo was excited to check him out as well.

We also both love Avocado.

I bought a Zippy Burrow (the Piñata toy) on a whim,  as we’ve never had a burrowing toy, and frankly, I didn’t think my dogs would like it.   Much to my surprise, Theo adores it.  After the photoshoot, Theo claimed the Piñata and the candies as his new number one toy.  He carries them from room to room and naps with them too. The candies have squeakers, but the Piñata does not.

After a month of having daily access to both Carmen the Cactus and the Piñata toy, I can highly recommend them to dogs who play gently to moderately with their toys.  Even though Theo plays with the Piñata toy every single day,  it still looks brand new.  Carmen no longer squeaks, but her squeaker lasted longer than most of the toys we get.

The Sugar Skull toy is extra tough.  He doesn’t have any stuffing, which means less cleanup IF Theo can tear into him.

If I saw ZippyPaws Storybook toys in a store, I would think they were designed for toddlers.  They are so cute and cuddly.  I guess dogs really are the new kids!

I designed a calendar of my furbabies using these images from our New Years’ photo session. Lacy, a five-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, and Miel, a three-year-old orange tabby, are best friends who spend their days running around our home.

 Lacy loves tug of war and long walks with her humans. Miel is content to hunt any bugs, creatures, or small, random objects around the house, and especially at night, when everyone else is trying to sleep.

Our dog, Lacy, and cat, Miel, were exhausted after posing for these 12 setups. And so were we.

Cloth masks are recommended or required for everyone these days, and Etsy has a ton of options.  This one from Embroidered Magic is stylish and is available with a pocket option for a filter.  If you want to show your love for cats, they offer several cat prints and even a fun cat face mask.  Although I’m a dog person through and through, I admit that one is pretty awesome!

55Tree offers a lot of different embroidery kits.  I gave one to my daughter this year for Christmas, and she is enjoying her new hobby.  After completing a kit, she developed the skills and confidence to make her own designs.  I’ve loved seeing all her creations, especially, now that she has more time on her hands.

If you have extra time, you might just want to bake this recipe from The Shakespeare Shop.   Although I’ve never wanted to live in the 16th century, I want to taste that bread!

Dog Treats

The way to a dog’s heart is through his stomach, so a bag of high-quality treats makes a great gift if your coworker has a dog.  Some of the brands my dogs love include Einstein Pets,  Newman’s Own Dog Biscuits, and Buddy Biscuits. If you have time, try making our vegan Peanut Butter Dreams for dogs.  If you have the time and energy, make a treat jar to make it extra special..

Etsy is my favorite place to shop.  I love supporting small businesses and finding wonderful creations from the comfort of my own home.

If I’m shopping for a gift, Etsy is often the first (and usually the last) stop.  However, I’m the classic down the rabbit hole shopper.

I’ll start looking for a pet portrait gift and get inspired to buy Theo a new bow tie.  The next thing I know, I’m searching for brass dog figurines before I resume the hunt for the perfect, yet elusive, vintage side table for my plants. (Which naturally leads to a search for new planters, plants, and table linens.) By the time I circle back to the pet portrait gift, I may have forgotten what the contenders were, and I definitely don’t remember the name of the store or item.

Thanks to Etsy Favorites and List features, I am free to go down as many rabbit holes as I like without getting hopelessly lost.

Now, I can save items I like and even organize them with the list feature. 

How to Use Etsy Favorites And Lists

Favoriting an item is easy. Just click on the heart on the right side of the photo.  I’m in love with this Pomeranian Embroidery Art from my daughter’s shop,  NakedNeedleNYC.  She upcycles fabric scraps to create handstitched art.

After clicking the heart, there will be an option to add to a list at the bottom of the screen.   You can create a new list easily by typing in the name. After that, you can make it public or private.

Since I’m the type of person who often likes to mull things over for a while, I like to sort my top favorites into lists.  This makes them easier to find when I’m ready to make a purchase.

Just remember that most items on Etsy are one of a kind and may not be available if you take a long time between putting them on your list and actually buying it.

Who could resist this sweet face? Not me!  My sister’s dog, Darla, was the inspiration for this portrait.

Now that you know how easy it is to save a favorite item to a list, I’m sharing some of my Etsy Favorites and Lists.

Dog Beds

Like so many people, I’ve rearranged my house during this pandemic.   In doing so, I created a new area that needs a dog bed. I think this one from Laylo Pets might just be what we need.

Plants

In addition to my love of dogs, I’m crazy about plants!  Etsy is a great place to buy planters, macrame hangers, and even plants. (I always double-check to see if a plant is toxic to pets before deciding to add one to my home.)

Fashion Hound

When Theo first joined our family, I made him a green seersucker bow tie.  However, I think he might need a light blue version too.

I bought this sweater for one of my grand dogs and an Irish knit sweater for Theo.  But if you’re a DIY’er, you might want to check out hand-dyed yarn from WebSpunWares.

Home

Besides having almost everything a dog could need, Etsy has so many great choices for decorating your home.

In addition to some amazing wall art, Etsy has collectibles, vintage furniture, and accessories.

Table Linens & Tea Towels

When my kids were small, we had a fairly tight budget.  I didn’t buy pretty dishcloths because I was afraid of ruining them.  But now that I’m older, I realize the joy of using a tea towel you like outweighs the despair of a staining one.   Having items like this makes the mundane more fun!

Cloth napkins are another luxury that I enjoy.  My daughter gave me some a few years ago, and I LOVE them.  They set the mood for dinner, and they are so much better for the environment than the paper ones we used to use.  You can find ones that are quite reasonably priced on Etsy.

Everywhere you turn, someone is advising that you shop early for the holidays this year.  Even though I’m usually all about last-minute gifts, this isn’t the year to procrastinate.  My favorite gifts to give (and receive) are art, specifically, pet and family portraits.  This family portrait by Courtney Ahn Design is one of my favorites!

I commissioned Courtney to create this family portrait of my daughter, daughter-in-law, and their pets, Roxy the dog and Marshall the cat.  We love the final product so much!  Although Courn’s turn-around time is fast for custom art, you might want extra time to have the portrait printed and framed!

Courtney offers various styles of portraits, but she only accepts commissions a few times a year.  I think that she will be taking some orders in October but email her directly to be sure.
